A HISTORICAL TITAN TROPIC CUBA
Havana (12-3-2016) - Cuba lives moments of enormous historical importance, and the Titan Tropic Cuba by Gaes will be protagonist from tomorrow on a very special edition. Respecting the pain of the Cuban people, the second edition of this demanding mountain bike test starts tomorrow with a non-competitive transfer for the 150 registered participants.
The organization has adapted quickly to the historical moment that the country lives with the passing of Commander Fidel Castro. Thus, respecting the nine-day mourning decreed by the Cuban authorities, the prologue scheduled for December 3rd on the streets of Havana has been suspended, and the morning session between Havana and Soroa, 97km, will not be timed and will not have a winner, although the participants must carry out the whole route with a time inferior to 9 hours and a half.
After the nine days of mourning, the Titan Tropic Cuba by Gaes 2016 will start with all honors with stage 2, on Monday, December 5th, in a very demanding day with start and finish in Soroa, 106 km.
Today the 150 participants, from eleven countries, have passed the verifications at the Hotel Palco de La Habana. The official press conference of the event has also been held with representatives of the organization and the maximum favorites.
"We are very pleased with the internationalization of the Titan Tropic Cuba by Gaes. In addition, we are living a historic moment for Cuba and we want to thank the Cuban authorities for easing things up that have allowed us to carry out the test" said Juan Porcar, CEO of RPM-MKTG, organizers of the event.
The current winner of the event, Diego Alejandro Tamayo, returns to Cuba with the intention of renewing his winning crown: "Since last year I have opt for the Titan Tropic. I won and I fell in love with it" said the Colombian, who has been training these last months in Costa Rica.
One of his main rivals will be the Spanish Josep Betalú, who has expressed his intention to win and "show off" the Cuban tracks, after triumphing this year in the desert at the GAES Titan Desert by Garmin.
Among the favorites we find the legendary veteran MTB racer Tinker Juarez, Ismael Ventura or local Jose Mojica, as well as former professional road cycling rider Luis Pasamontes, who will compete in the test to give visibility to the fight against cancer and Cystic fibrosis. In the feminine section, the Cuban Olga Anabel Echenique defends the title obtained last year.
Other popular faces of the test are former Formula One driver Jaime Alguersuari, journalist Antonio Lobato or ultra trail runner Nuria Picas, who have wanted to join the adventure.
Soroa already awaits the participants, in one of the most beautiful places on the island. Participants will arrive through a forest to the first and spectacular Soroa camp, Biosphere Reserve and where stands the Orchid garden that hosts more than 20,000 specimens of 130 species. The Titan Tropic Cuba by Gaes adventure begins.
